Stage 1 vs Stage 2: What Actually Changes on Your AMG

The Short Answer

Stage 1 is software only: a map written for your AMG exactly as it left the factory, with no hardware changes. Stage 2 is software written around hardware upgrades, typically downpipes, intake or exhaust.

At MSL Performance, both are Stage 1 & 2 tuning, tailored to your exact car. Neither is a file pulled off a shelf. The difference is what the map has to work with.

What Is Stage 1?

Stage 1 rewrites the engine’s calibration (fuelling, ignition timing, boost on turbocharged engines, and torque limits) to use the headroom the factory left in reserve. The car’s hardware stays exactly as Mercedes-AMG built it.

For most owners it is the natural first step: more performance, a sharper response, and nothing to fit.

What Is Stage 2?

Stage 2 is software written around hardware upgrades, typically downpipes, intake or exhaust. Those parts change how the engine breathes, so the map has to be written for them, not for the standard car.

That is why Stage 2 always starts with confirming the hardware fitted to your car before anything is written.

Why Can't You Just Flash a Stage 2 File?

Because the map and the hardware have to match. A Stage 2 file written for a different exhaust, different downpipes or a different fuel is a guess about your car.

We write the map for the parts actually fitted, then refine it with live datalogging on our dyno. Where parts are needed, we fit genuine parts from partners such as Weistec, IPE and The Turbo Engineers.

How Much Power Does Each Stage Add?

It depends on the engine, its condition and the fuel it runs on, which is why we don’t publish generic gain figures. Every number we publish is measured on our own dyno, before and after, on that car.

Results vary with vehicle condition, fuel grade and specification.

Does It Work the Same on Every AMG?

No. Each engine gets its own map. The 6.2-litre M156 V8 in the W204 C63 is naturally aspirated, so its calibration works through fuelling, timing and breathing. The 4.0-litre M177 V8 biturbo and the 2.0-litre M139 in the A45 S are turbocharged, so boost control is part of the map too.

That is why the engine code matters more than the badge on the boot.

What About the Gearbox?

On many AMGs, the transmission calibration can be tuned alongside the engine, so shift behaviour and torque handling match the new map. Whether it is worth doing depends on the car and how you drive it. We’ll tell you straight.

Your original factory file is stored, so the car can be returned to stock at any time.

Which Stage Is Right for You?

Four questions usually decide it:

  • Is the car a daily driver, a weekend car, or both?
  • Are you planning hardware upgrades now, later, or not at all?
  • What matters most: response, outright power, or sound?
  • Are there warranty terms you need to check first?

Send us the answers with your car and model year, and we’ll recommend a stage.

How We Do It at MSL Performance

Both stages start from your car’s own baseline dyno run at our workshop in Al Quoz, Dubai, not a generic template. The map is written for the exact engine code, fuel and specification in front of us, refined across multiple pulls, and finished with a final dyno run and a printed before/after result you keep.

It is the same team behind a verified McLaren 720S world record: 211.74 mph half-mile, as published by Dodson Motorsport.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01 — Can I start with Stage 1 and move to Stage 2 later?

Yes. When the hardware is fitted, the map is rewritten around it and verified on the dyno again.

02 — Does Stage 2 need a different fuel?

The map is written for the fuel you actually use. We’ll confirm the right fuel for your car and stage before anything is written.

03 — Is Stage 2 harder on the car?

More output asks more of the engine and drivetrain. That is why we confirm the hardware first, health-check the car, and datalog every pull while the map is refined.

04 — Can both stages be reversed?

The software can always go back to stock, because your original file is stored. Stage 2 hardware would need the standard parts refitted.
